“You’re lucky that you got administrative leave,” Chief Byron said. “I understand that you had the lady’s best interest at heart, but you put them and yourself at risk.”

“Yes, sir,” Alex said. He felt too put upon to give an elaborate response or defense. He'd left the meeting with his balls, pay and benefits pretty much intact. They agreed further investigation needed to be conducted. The representatives on the panel all looked at him as if he'd committed a grave offense, and completely dismissed the reality. He'd saved a life. Now, he stood in the Chief’s office, towering over the man who sat at his desk.

“The truck isn't equipped with the equipment or medication. Your actions probably seemed necessary at the time, but they were beyond unacceptable.”

“I know, sir.”

“If they don't fire your ass this time around, they sure as hell will next time.”

“Got it, sir,” Alex said. He watched Chief Byron’s lips thinning a little as he gave him an exasperated look.

“You'd do it again, if you had to, wouldn't you?” the chief asked with a sigh.

“Yes, sir.” Alex said without hesitation.

“Well, I can't say I blame you,” he said with a slight smile. “Sometimes you've got to bend the rules and take a risk. No telling what would have happened if you waited on the ambulance to arrive. You saved that young woman. Well done.”

“Thank you, sir,” Alex said, noticing the sudden emotion slipping around the crack of his words. He swallowed it down immediately.

“Just don't tell anyone I said that. Otherwise, I'll be in deep shit too.” The chief offered what looked to be a conciliatory grin. “Head back home. Hopefully the investigation will be over in a few weeks.”

“Yes, sir,” Alex said.

But the moment he stepped out of the Chief’s office and switched on his phone, he received his brother’s message. It read:

Alex. When are you free

We need to talk.
